3 Ways To Conserve Water for Earth Day
Water wasting seems to be a global issue that has been occurring for decades. Many communities enforce water restrictions due to such wastefulness. There are three simple ways that homeowners can conserve water to help with rising energy costs. Turning off the faucet while brushing their teeth, using low-flow showerheads, and fixing leaks in pipes are three ways to conserve water.
These are very easy methods that homeowners can do at any time. However, repairing pipes that may be leaking should be done by a professional plumber.
Turn off the Tap
Conserving water conserves energy and thus reduces carbon pollution. Running the tap while brushing teeth or shaving can save up to 8 gallons of water each day. This can save a total of 200 gallons per month.
Homeowners can also turn off the water while washing their hands. The average American washes their hands almost 9 times per day. If they scrub their hands for 20 seconds with the water off, it can conserve at least 6 gallons of water per day.
Additionally, when homeowners shave, they should shut the water off while doing so. The water should only be turned on when rinsing off the razor, face, or legs.
Bathe, Don’t Shower
Some homeowners may have different views on this subject, but occasionally bathing rather than showering can reduce energy costs and save water. Filling the bathtub only needs to happen once, whereas showering can waste up to 2.5 gallons a minute.
If the homeowner prefers to shower, then it’s advised that they shut off the water while washing their hair or using body wash to conserve more water.
Check for Leaks
Leaky pipes, couplings, and faucets can use up more water than necessary. Leaks in the plumbing can waste between 2,000 to 20,000 gallons of water per year. Not only that, but it can cause mold issues, structural damage, and more. These leaks can then raise the energy bills if the pump is always running.
One way to stop this issue is to have a plumber come out and check for leaks. Leaky faucets are simple to take care of. The plumber can come out and replace the faucet for a fair price generally. Additionally, they will inspect the couplings that connect the water lines. If these are leaking, they will need replacement. The constant dripping can lead to pools of water that can damage the home.
